A personal assistant (sometimes called a personal care attendant or PCA) provides the support necessary for someone with a disability to live and work in the community. Typically, a personal assistant works directly for the individual with a disability, although similar services may be provided by home health aides who work for an agency like Blossom HealthCare Inc.

Who uses a PAS

Anyone who, because of a disability, needs support to accomplish everyday tasks may benefit from having a personal assistant.

  • Individuals with physical disabilities may need assistance with bathing and dressing to get ready for work. They may also need assistance in the workplace with activities such as transportation, using the restroom, or communicating.
  • Employees with vision impairments may need assistance with transportation if their job involves making home visits or going to different work locations.
  • People who are deaf may need the services of an interpreter.
  • Someone who needs cueing may arrange with a coworker or other natural supports to provide this support on the job.
